Access to your wills and personal documents is secure with limited access to your documents that being either yourself or your executor. We require in person appointments for document retrieval and 2 pieces of government picture ID to be presented.

Why is the original Will so important?

The original Will is the official, court-recognized document that ensures the deceased’s wishes are followed legally and efficiently. Without it, the estate may face delays, legal hurdles, or unintended distribution. The court might require additional documentation, testimony from witnesses, or even a formal hearing to accept a copy.
If only a copy is available, beneficiaries might contest the Will, claiming it was altered or revoked.
The original Will is critically important after someone’s death because it serves as the legally binding document that outlines the deceased’s final wishes.

Does CDH only store wills and documents, or can you store other items?

Accepted Answer

CDH specifically stores wills and personal paper documents. Other items such as jewelry, collections such as coins or cards can be stored in a safety deposit box at a bank or somewhere secured in your home. It is best to speak to your property insurance provider about the coverage you have and/or can get for these items and what recommendations they have.

Question 4

Does CDH only hold wills or do they hold other documents?

We hold wills as well as other personal documents. It is best to discuss what those other documents are with one of your expert team members. They will pinpoint whether or not CDH is appropriate for the other documents you are wanting to store by doing an analysis of need and overall use of the document. For example, how often will the document need to be retrieved and why? At CDH, we want the storage of your documents to make sense for YOU and your family for the years to come.

Question 5

Who can access my documents?

Accepted Answer

For privacy reasons, only two people will have permission to access your Will and personal documents – you and your executor. We will require an appointment to be made in person at our office and 2 pieces of government issued picture ID will be required at the time of the appointment.
- The affiliated retrieval fee will also apply.
- You will be provided with a copy of the will along with a PDF digital copy. As the owner of the Will, it is up to you to share those documents with others aside from the executor. It is advisable to speak to a lawyer about the risks of doing this.

Question 6

Can’t I simply keep my Will in my safety deposit box at home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can, but the risks are greater. Other elements of the home increase the risk of losing your Will and documents as the home is exposed to more electrical risks, fire hazards and other common property losses.

Question 7

Where are my documents held?

Accepted Answer

CDH has a private undisclosed storage facility. The address/location of the facility is not shared with anyone as a preventative measure to protect those who have stored their wills and documents. No one will have any knowledge or access which greatly reduces the risk of arson, robbery and other criminal measure or risks that may compromise the safety and secure storage of your Will.
